A top piece of digital technology in your pocket: it’s called Evolution Wireless Digital and it’s the new microphone from Sennheiser, launched at the beginning of June in an exclusive global online event and distributed on the Italian market by Exhibo.
The keywords are intelligence, usability and security. The Evolution Wireless Digital (EW-D) microphone accompanies the long-awaited restart of live events, but is equally flexible for conferencing, business systems and educational applications, protagonists of a technological acceleration due to the events of the last year.
To launch and announce the news, characterised by a workflow via app, simple but reliable even in professional audio systems, Sennheiser organised a global press conference via live stream. The editorial staff of Connessioni were there, punctually signing on at 9am on the 1st June, to meet the top management, the R&D experts “creators” of technological innovation and to welcome a final surprise, which made us see and listen to the potential of this wireless system.

Digital evolution to “work” without thinking
“Our strategy is orientated towards the development of smart products such as the microphones that we present today, strengthening the proposal of digital services dedicated to audio pro” explain the two CEOs of the company – Andreas and Daniel Sennheiser. “The ability to manage everything through an app, connected via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), allows users to focus on what really matters. Making music, teaching, holding a conference, surprising the public: we have made the passions of professionals our own, translating them into a digital and performing solution. But the real focus is on the ease of use of these technologies, designed to accompany all audio experiences, from the simplest to the most complex, with the same simplicity.”
That is why, before getting to work, EW-D product manager Oliver Schmitz and his staff spoke to numerous end customers, understanding their needs and difficulties. When it comes to microphones, the main concern, especially in musical bands, is related to frequencies. “The members of the groups are often multitasking, they set up the systems, they perform on stage, they deal with marketing, they manage the accounts. In short, they need microphones that work immediately, at the flick of a switch. But we can say the same for facility managers and teaching management” explains Schmitz. The answer, therefore, is in this app that can plan and configure the system in an automated way. Because forgetting big and small details, thanks to intelligent technology, can reduce stress before, during and after each event.
The characteristics of the new EW-D
The heart of the Evolution Wireless Digital microphones, therefore, is the Smart Assist App, which guides professionals like a “pocket engineer.” An intelligent setup that automatically creates reliable wireless connections and requires no technical skills. BLE technology allows remote access to the system and makes synchronisation with the receiver immediate. The app also includes video tutorials and operating instructions. Furthermore, the EW-D transmitters offer a dynamic input range of 134 dB, five times higher than the traditional 120 dB. This means managing both a whisper-equivalent sound and significantly higher volumes, without the need for a sensitivity setting.

Another critical issue for “live” audio is the calculation of the frequency. But even here no problem: the app scans the environment to find the open frequencies. In addition, the EW-D is based on Sennheiser’s superior Digital 6000 and Digital 9000 series technology, so wireless microphone systems do not generate significant intermodulation. This not only leaves more room in a given frequency window, but the app can also simply set up wireless links at evenly spaced 600 kHz intervals without any frequency calculation, with more flexibility than a standard microphone system.
Furthermore, among the most relevant specifications, EW-D has a low latency of 1.9 milliseconds and a transmitter battery life of up to 12 hours with BA 70 rechargeable batteries. A bandwidth of 56 MHz with a maximum of 90 channels per band makes it easy to find space in even the busiest RF environments. The range of accessories completes the work: from antennas to antenna splitters, to boosters, to charging sets. The system is expandable and allows for a larger multi-channel set-up for live or streaming events.
