In recent times, companies are beginning to get serious about the environmental sustainability side, in some cases as part of their market approach, which is increasingly appreciated by customers, and in others because they are spurred or forced by local regulations. And in many cases because of a mix of the two.
Technologies can help on several fronts, on the side of consumption control or space management, aspects that our readers are already familiar with. But they can also be important in controlling the proliferation of the use of plastics, especially single-use materials, which, as we know, are invading the ecosystem.
In France in early 2023, legislation came into effect to contain waste and severely limit the use of unnecessary packaging and single-use plastics, with which even the big fast food players had to deal. McDonald’s has thus, with the help of Checkpoint Systems, introduced an RFID system for tracking reusable containers, a new solution that is the result of a long period of experimentation, food-safe, heat- and water-resistant, and able to offer 99 percent accuracy thanks to the software tracking system.
McDonald’s will thus be able to reduce waste by gaining real-time visibility of reusable dishware quantities, ensuring fast and efficient inventory management, and improving the safety and usability of the restaurant’s storage lines, all the way to controlling shrinkage through track & trace tracking. To date, Checkpoint has provided RFID solutions to more than 1,200 McDonald’s France restaurants, and we hope that our country will soon follow suit.
