Starting this year, Reuters’ global network of reporters will use Alpha 7S III and PXW-Z280 cameras to report on world events.
Sony is pleased to announce that Reuters, one of the world’s largest news agencies, has chosen Alpha and XDCAM cameras, G Master lenses and audio equipment to equip its video journalists worldwide. The fleet will use the Alpha 7S III and PXW-Z280 as the main shooting kit, combined with UWP-D wireless audio.
Since its launch, the Alpha 7S III has established itself as the camera of choice for on-site content creators who require a compact form factor and exceptional image quality. In this case, advanced autofocus performance for hybrid use, coupled with exceptional low-light performance, were key features in Reuters’ decision-making process. Sony’s E-mount strategy will also give journalists the flexibility to capture images in their most authentic form when perfectly matched with Sony’s extensive lens options of their choice, including the SEL2470GM2.
The PXW-Z280 has become an industry standard thanks to its ease of use, variable electronic ND filter and Sony’s Instant HDR workflow, which eliminates the need for colour grading. With its advanced networking features and multi-format support, it can be easily, securely and wirelessly incorporated into a cloud-based newsgathering workflow.
Both cameras benefit from the connectivity features needed to easily connect to the cloud for reliable and seamless content transfer from the capture location to the remote broadcast unit, which is particularly critical for newsgathering that emphasises speed.
The cameras and associated equipment were shipped to 23 Reuters locations worldwide as early as April 2024.

This investment by the news agency is a testament to the long-standing relationship between Reuters and Sony, fuelled by Sony’s deep understanding of the needs of journalists in the field and Reuters’ mission to deliver timely, quality news. Sony’s Media Backbone Hive is already in use at Reuters as the leading multi-platform news production system.
Gildas Pelliet, Imaging and Professional Solutions, Sony Europe, commented: “We are delighted that Reuters has chosen Sony for this key element of its technology ecosystem. In a pressured environment, nothing is more important for a news organisation than to be reliable and timely. This is where reliability, image quality and cloud-based workflows become paramount, and these are the qualities we have brought to our cameras and workflow solutions.” “
