The fascinating sound installation was created around the Fénis Castle with d&b audiotechnik subwoofers and low-frequency sound waves.
B.A.S.: PERMANENCE is the work of the artist Stefanie Egedy, inaugurated 24th June 2023
“My work depends a lot on the choice of subwoofers” Stefanie Egedy tells us, an artist who investigates sound at 360°, both as an electronic music composer and as an all-round artist, aiming to lower the sound, especially at low frequency, into the landscape and in the human dimension. Alongside the possibilities of interaction between human and architectural bodies and sound waves, Stefanie is interested in the intersection between sound language and the environment, to investigate the sound communication between beings. “There are subwoofers that are perfect for music, others for the sounds of nature or to make the audience feel the vibrations, to make the sound tactile” continues Stefanie.
Inaugurated 24th June 2023, her latest installation is located around the Fénis Castle, in the Italian region Val d’Aosta. Based on the specifics of the environment, Stefanie Egedy arranged the d&b subwoofers to offer the visitor a real “vibrational experience”: the public can walk, stop, sit on the wooden benches made by some local craftsmen and stop as long as they like while experience the sensation of sound waves that brush against the body, and integrate in some way with the landscape, giving it a “voice”. This type of sound and vibrational experience, based on low-frequency sound, also has therapeutic effects (reduction of stress and anxiety), and is part of the broader concept, already pursued for some time by Stefanie Egedy, called BODIES AND SUBWOOFERS (hence the acronym B.A.S.). The idea is that the individual site-specific installations are “unique pieces”, built for each location on the basis of a careful analysis of the specifics of the space. Stefanie therefore arranges the subwoofers and selects the sound frequencies taking into account their transparency, as well as resonances and reverberations.
The choice fell on the d&b subwoofers, based on 18” transducers with a maximum SPL of 148 dB, a low frequency limit at 25 Hz and usable in both standard and cardioid configurations. Each B.A.S. created by Stefanie Egedy has its own unique subwoofer layout, calculated based on the size of the space as well as the type of subwoofer chosen. In this way, Stefanie creates a sort of contrast between “live zones”, characterized by higher sound pressures, and “dead zones”, in which there is no sound pressure.
Although invisible to the eye, the “touch of sound” therefore embraces bodies and spaces, uniting and merging them in perception.
“I chose d&b subwoofers after discovering them at a festival in 2021, I was convinced by the technical characteristics that were right for me and perfectly suited to the needs of a B.A.S. series installation.”
After all, who ever said that technique and technology cannot be completely at the service of art?
