We often thank companies, taking inspiration for texts and posts, for the market information, surveys, and data they commission and then make available to professionals in the field. In this case, it is Sony Professional Displays & Solutions that commissioned 3Gem to conduct a survey on work patterns among 3,000 office workers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Uk, and Poland.
The result is imaginable and reflects what we already have in front of our eyes every day, but the data are as significant as can be: 46 percent of respondents believe that asynchronous work (i.e., not necessarily done at the same times and ways for everyone, but with the possibility of deciding at least in part independently as long as common deadlines and appointments are met) is the future, both to be more productive and to better reconcile private life and work. At the same time, they believe that offices are not adequately equipped to support asynchronous work (58 percent) and that in general, in the future perspective, having them is crucial both for productivity and for maintaining a good relationship with co-workers. Finally, statistics about Italy indicate that 54 percent of workers want employers to provide the flexibility needed to work asynchronously.
Overall, the results indicate that the office plays an important role in the future of work, however, it should be used as a hub to encourage collaboration, with asynchronous working as a model to promote flexibility and work-life balance.
This is a conclusion we already know in everyday practice, but one that companies are still not quite ready to embrace, perhaps in part because social and state structures still hardly recognize it: even if politics is not among the topics we deal with, it is still true that it comes under our themes when it plays a role in the market. And in this case in Italy, where working conditions under national contracts no longer reflect reality, a little realism wouldn’t hurt.
Sony Professional Displays & Solutions offers TEOS the workspace management system for companies of all sizes.
