Canon has chosen the IBC 2022 to present its offering of solutions for broadcast and film production, from the imaging ecosystem for live production to XR Studio and VR solutions, to PTZ cameras and the EOS R5 C and XF605 cameras.
Anticipated by an exhaustive press conference, held on 30 August, in which Franco Palleni, Pre-Sales Business Consultant of Canon Italy’s ITCG, illustrated the main features of the new products, Canon’s participation in IBC 2022 reflected the great changes experienced by the industry in recent years, where the growing need for low-cost content has led virtual and remote production systems to impose. Visitors in Amsterdam were able to see in action, first of all, Canon’s new imaging ecosystem for live production, a customizable multi-camera configuration designed to meet the growing demand for solutions capable of supporting remote and live production. Canon Ambassador and filmmaker Sébastien Devaud spoke to illustrate the practical application of this solution: the new Canon PTZ cameras, which support a series of IP protocols, have been combined with high-end Cinema cameras, such as the EOS C300 Mark III and XF605, using the Canon XC protocol. The shots, displayed on professional reference monitors, were shown in real time to visitors, to better show the new opportunities offered to live and remote production.
Also very interesting are the XR Studio solutions, which offer filmmakers a more efficient and high quality configuration. In collaboration with Mo-Sys, a company specializing in virtual production solutions, Canon presented its XR software. Applied to various products, including the EOS C500 Mark II and Flex Zoom lenses, the solution allows the high-resolution LED background to react according to the camera and lens. In addition, director and filmmaker Brett Danton shared his experience of using the Canon kit for his recent work, made using extended reality (XR) methods.
The Canon booth at IBC 2022 was then completed by the VR Area, where visitors who wanted to take a break were able to immerse themselves in a series of VR contents made with the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R5 C cameras and with the RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE lens. VR solution provider Invelon has created two VR experiences: a trip on a quad bike to discover a wonderful tourist location or in the backstage of a rock band, to experience ambisonic audio with the VR headsets supplied by Varjo and powered by Lenovo computer.
Finally, a focus also on the five new 4K cameras presented by Canon: there are four professional models – XA65, XA60, XA75 and XA70 – and a prosumer model, LEGRIA HF G70. The new cameras are suitable for a wide range of uses, including documentaries, corporate events and education, and offer professional performance with 4K quality and HD UVC streaming via USB-C, with advanced autofocus and detection capabilities. face. All models allow MP4 recording, while the four professional camcorders are also equipped with XF-AVC recording to support broadcast applications.
Ryan Kamata, Canon Europe’s European Senior Product Marketing Manager commented: “It was great to come back to IBC to showcase our latest innovations. In 2019, the content production and creation industry was completely different. The pandemic has prompted this industry to scale up virtual and remote manufacturing to support smaller teams and independent operators. And that’s exactly what we showed on our stand. We have worked hard to push the boundaries with our integrated solutions and to explain to our customers the benefits they can derive from them.”
